Washington's Birthday Search Fix

Monday, February 19, 2007

Just a quick post to let you guys know that I fixed a small but annoying bug with the search field — you no longer have to race to type in your searches for fear that a new video will pop up on the home page and obliterate your search.

Happy Birthday, George (here in Massachusetts, we still officially celebrate "Washington's Birthday")!

G4 — Attack of the Show

Thursday, February 16, 2007

We've received a number of great reviews of the site from all over the world, and we'll be setting up a cheers/jeers page shortly with the positive and the negative, but one review that was awesome to see appeared live on G4's Attack of the Show tonight (will post the video shortly). To our surprise, WiiToob was featured alongside MapWii during the show's Web Tools segment where Kevin and Olivia applauded our "pretty interface."

Needless to say, it's very humbling for us to go from non-existent to nationally televised in two short weeks, and we really appreciate all the support we've recieved.

Thank you G4, AoTS, Olivia Munn, Kevin Pereira, et al!

Bug Fixes

Sunday, February 11, 2007

Turns out that spending only a couple days putting together a high traffic site isn't always enough time to make it perfect.

There was a bug with search where only the first word of the search was actually getting searched on, making searches like 'wii' work perfectly but rendering searches like 'The Mars Volta' utterly useless since it was really only searching on 'the.' Searching for 'Stevie Ray Vaughan' would bring back some Stevie Ray videos, but also Stevie Wonder (and, coincidently, some videos containing both Stevie Ray Vaughan and Stevie Wonder).

Anyway, it should be fixed now, so Lance can now go on with his bad self and watch The Mars Volta or The White Stripes; or even better, he can watch The Pogues or The Pixies or The Ramones. In any case, we apologize for the inconvenience — I think that may have given some people the impression that there weren't many videos on WiiToob when that's really not the case at all... we just offer a window into YouTube from your Wii, plain and simple. If it's on YouTube, it's on WiiToob.

One of Lance's other suggestions is also pretty astute — some search results pages are awfully long and are kind of a bummer to scroll up from when you've scrolled far away. I've got some ideas on how to approach that and will try to implement something soon... please bear with us as we grow!

Please continue to let us know if anything else breaks!

Dugg

Friday, February 9, 2007

After sharing the existence of the site on a couple of forums and with some Wii fan sites, word quickly started to spread right on up to Digg, where it hit the home page and immediately doused the virtual machine that hosts WiiToob. We quickly jumped the amount of ram on the VM and it seemed to hold very well. Thanks to everyone for spreading the word so fast about the site — it's really taken off faster than I imagined it would.

WiiToob Born

Sunday, February 4, 2007

After spending some hours surfing YouTube via the Wii one night, it became pretty clear that a site needed to be made to make life a little easier for Wii YouTube surfers... hence WiiToob was born after a weekend of work on the 4th of Febuary, 2007.
